On July 29, 1992, 13 arborists embarked on Tour des Trees, a 1,050-mile bicycle ride from Seattle, Washington to Oakland, California, to raise money for the International Society of Arboriculture Research Trust and to increase public awareness of the importance of trees to the environment. Bikes plus STIHL chain saws equals…healthy trees!
The STIHL Tour des Trees is a weeklong, 500-mile cycling event held each year to benefit the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund). Since its inception in 1992 the Tour des Trees has raised more than $5 million for scientific research and education programs related to arboriculture (the science of caring for trees in a landscape) and urban forestry. STIHL Inc., manufacturer of the number one selling brand of chain saws in the world, has been the Tour’s title sponsor since 2009.
Each full-Tour cyclist commits to raising $3500, and the proceeds of the event support the discovery of better methods for propagation, planting and care of urban trees. The Tour also funds education programs aimed at connecting young people with the environment and with career opportunities in the green industry. With itineraries in the U.S., Canada and abroad, the legacy of the Tour des Trees includes a growing urban forest planted by its cyclists and a new appreciation among the residents of its destination communities for the trees which shade their lives.
